Group Fitness For Newbees- Fall Class Changes

In the fall we will be making a few great changes to our classes. Bootcamp will be re-named FitBody Circuit Training . The current class will be considered a Level 2 (Intermediate/Advanced) class. A FitBody Circuit Training Level  1 (Introductory/Beginner) class will be added to the schedule, which  will be designed to introduce you,  or re-introduce you to fitness in a safe and “do-able ” manner. This class will be for people that are new to fitness , haven’t worked out in a long time, or have a considerable amount of  weight to lose.

My goal for making these changes is to make fitness accesible to everyone, recognizing that everyone has to start somewhere. While I know that everyone needs to be pushed in order to make fitness gains, they need to be pushed at their maximum level, whatever that may be at the time. Hopefully this Level 1 class will take the intimidation out of group fitness and encourage you to make fitness a regular part of your active lifestyle.

Level 1 will for sure be held on Tuesdays at 12:15 and Thursdays at 12:15. For evening classes I am thinking of putting it in either the 6:15pm slot or 7:3opm on Wednesday nights.

I am also considering doing regular classes on Saturday mornings (if we have enough numbers!!!) Please let me know what time works best for you. Chances are I will do both level 1 and 2 on Saturday.

Please let me know what your preferences are so that I can give you the schedule you want. If you don’t give me input, you can’t complain:)Either leave comments here below the blog , or email me at info@wellbodymassage.ca

Here’s to your health!

Real Men Do Yoga and I can prove it!

Okay guys it is time to put this myth to bed! Yoga is for the “weaker sex” ? Absolutely NOT!
If you are using this as your excuse to not hit the mat, then you are missing out on the powerful benefits Yoga has to offer. Male athletes and celebrities (the “manly men” ) have been experiencing the rewards of a regular yoga practice for years. I’m talking serious benefits-ones that you probably haven’t even thought of! Things like increased flexibility, relief for back pain, increased strength (yes, even for you super strong guys),improved mental focus, anti-aging and improved sex life! Do I have your attention now?

More and more athletes as well as “average Joes” are learning that they too can experience the benefits of yoga. They are also learning that yoga is not for a one-size/one shape fits all. You don’t have to have a “yoga body” and you don’t have to become a contortionist to get those previously mentioned benefits either.

Some sports teams make it part of their mandatory training. Teams like the New York Giants, Chicago Cubs, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, LA Lakers and more know that they can go faster, harder, longer at their sport while also greatly reducing their risk of injury.

Guys frequently get intimidated for a number of reasons.  Commonly I hear “oh, I’m too stiff for yoga” . Really?? I once heard a wise man say “being too stiff for yoga is like saying I’m too dirty for a shower”.  It’s exactly the ones that can’t touch their toes that should be in yoga.

Sometimes I hear ” I’ll sweat too much” . Ask any yoga teacher their thoughts on this one and most will respond with a ” sweating is terrific, it’s your body detoxifying”

Lastly, I hear “it’s just not manly” . Seriously guys some of the “manliest” of men practice yoga on a regular basis. Here is a brief list: Shaq O’Neil, Brian Boucher, Matthew McConaughay, Carlos Delgado, Pete Sampras, Carl Lewis, Mark Messier, John McEnroe, Sting, Barry Zito, Evander Holyfield, Willem DaFoe, Kevin Garnett, Tobey McGuire and I could go on and on.

So really, stop with the excuses! Get on the mat and give it a try.

A Neat Trick I Learned At Meditation To Hurry Up And Relax

Sometimes in this very rushed world it is hard to find time for ourselves. A busy day at the office , followed by racing home in traffic, kids screaming for dinner, racing off to soccer practice, the bedtime routine, making lunches for everyone…you get the picture! It’s no wonder most of us are walking around stressed out and often find it hard to wind down for a night of restful slumber!

During a recent meditation class I learned the benefits of Left Nostril Breathing. This is a super easy technique that you can use any time that you are experiencing insomnia, anxiety, or stressful situations. This technique can be done just about anywhere and its’ benefits are almost instant.

To perform this technique all you have to do is gently block the air of your right nostril (with either your thumb or index finger) and continue breathing nice, full, even breaths, in and out through your left nostril.

How does this work? Well, when we breathe through our left nostril we begin to activate the right hemisphere of the brain, which in turn, activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) . The PNS is responsible for slowing the heart rate down, increasing digestion, and repairing the body. This “rest and digest” state is activated almost immediately when you begin the technique.

So the next time you you find yourself a little stressed out (or a lot!) try this breathing technique. You’ll be amazed at how fast it really works!

Massage Therapy-For All ages and All Stages

When most people think of massage therapy, they usually think of “grown ups” going for a massage after work to release all the tension from hours at the computer. While the majority of my clients are often people experiencing pain and discomfort from physically demanding jobs, or postural problems from sedentary jobs, I do have the opportunity to help other special populations.

In a previous blog, you may have noticed that I have an upcoming infant massage workshop. Babies and their caregivers (lol) can truly benefit from massage. Massage is a natural, drug-free way to help sooth common discomforts from congestion to constipation. And if we have a happy baby, we have a happy household:)

Prenatal massage is another special population where medications for aches and pains  need to be kept to a bare minimum, and massage therapy can be a safe and natural treatment for everything from common low back and hip pain to headaches and leg cramps.

Very often the “tweens” and teens are forgotten when it comes to massage therapy. I  know right now your probably thinking “why on earth would they need a massage?” Well if your kids are working and playing hard at hockey, soccer, dance, cheer-leading, – and lets face it, growing at a rapid rate- massage therapy can be a great way to help treat common injuries and discomforts from over doing it, and keep them in the game. And… what parents don’t usually realize is that company and work benefits almost always cover massage therapy for everyone in the household, including there kids, up until the age of 21.

Last but certainty not least, massage therapy has a tremendous benefit for seniors. Often times because of drug interactions and sensitivities pain medications are best avoided. This is where massage therapy can help to reduce pain and discomfort to keep seniors doing the things they love most, like gardening and keeping up with the grandchildren!

So next time you see a family member complaining about aches and pains or searching through the medicine cabinet, perhaps you should stop and think “maybe it’s time to book a massage?”

New Parents Mark Your Calendars!

My next infant massage workshop is going to be held  Tuesday, July 12th at 1:30 p.m. You will learn all  the tricks to soothe babies’ discomforts and receive a copy of my detailed course notes to refresh your memory . A brief social time with light refreshments will be provided. And… as an extra special bonus this time I will have the pleasure of introducing you to my friend Rachelle Hlaj from Little Smiles Photography.  She will be offering a FREE facebook photo of your little pride and joy to show off to all of your friends. Child minding will be provided for older siblings to free your time up to participate.
